On the so called Dülük Baba Tepesi, a hill close to Gazi Antep, lie the remains of an ancient sanctuary which has been examined since 2001 by the University of Münster. The sanctuary dates back to the Iron Age. In the Roman period, it was developed into a sanctuary for Jupiter Dolichenus and reached its largest expension. In late ancient times a monastery stood on the Dülük Baba Tepesi.

As part of a model project first steps for the preservation of the ancient sanctuary were made with the long-term goal to make the site accessible for visitors in form of an archaeological park. Furthermore, the project served as compact training unit for Syrian experts as part of a perennial grant from the DAI Istanbul. This program “Stewards of Cultural Heritage” received the EuropaNostra Award in 2019 (whttp://www.europeanheritageawards.eu/winners/stewards-cultural-heritage-germany/).

Since 2019 the project has been successfully continued by the University of Münster with financial support of the Gerda Henkel Foundation.
