During the building research and documentation of the upstanding Roman Temple in the center of Dmeir, a small city about 50 km north east of Damascus, the idea of an environmental design concept for the Temple’s surrounding public open space was born. The original ground level of the Temple is situated up to 5 m beneath the surrounding street level and should be accessible for visitors. Therefore, construction protection measures must be undertaken. The city center should shelter public facilities like coffee shop and terraces for guests and tourists and with a combination of supporting walls and staircases for access it would become an attraction pole for visitors. The supporting constructions against the higher street level could be executed in different shapes or even contain green elements as well as the terraces could offer benches and shadow from planted trees. The upstanding relics of the Roman Temple are in principle well preserved, but the stone walls show traces of different kind of use in history so a general restoration campaign should be carried out.
