The ruins of the medieval “Burg Drachenfels” are situated on the top of a red mountain rock in the forest near to the village of Busenberg. End of the 1980ies a total documentation of the ruins, mainly by hand in the scale of 1:20, was undertaken as a basis for scientific research and development of a concept for the preservation of the castle. Conservation and restoration work have been done in different parts of the ruins of the castle as in the casemates and the tower. The renewal and stabilization of the affected stone block façade-masonry and vaults were executed with appropriate stabilization techniques, materials, and procedures such as caementitium injection by high pressure. The appearance was preserved using original red sandstone blocks. Visitor access inside of the tower has been provided by the installation of a newel-staircase made out of inox-steel in the original tower position.
