Gadara Roman West-Theatre

Inside of the historic city of Gadara the Roman West-Theatre is situated south adjacent to the so-called Church Terrace with orientation of its stage house towards the Roman Cardo. The natural slope rising to the east was utilized for its ascending ranks of the Cavea. The comparatively small theatre was designed for a capacity of about 3000- 3500 seated people. Access to the Cavea was given from the Roman Cardo at both sides of the stage house and from several entrances from the sloped outside leading directly to the vaulted ambulatory. The theatre is built mainly from basalt rock with the exception of some structures of the already demolished parts of the stage house. In close cooperation with the Department of Antiquities, DoA Jordan, and in favor of its General Directorate, who personally took part in scientific research and documentation work of the theatre in the 90ies, a concept for physical safeguarding and revitalization measures of the historic monument was developed.
