Chimtou Archeological Site

There have been different excavation campaigns in various locations of Chimtou throughout the time. In the seventies of the last century, the Numidian Necropolis under the Roman Forum and up to its eastern side the remainings of Numidian settlement structures had been in the focus of digging activities. Later, in the eighties conservation and presentation works took place in the Necropolis and 2016-18 on the eastern upside structures. A new excavation in the northern part of ancient Simitthus defined in the ruins of an elder digging area the ground building structures of a Roman temple, followed by Christian building constructions inside a large temenos. From 2012 on conservation and partly reconstruction measures had been undertaken and a system of information panels had been generally installed on visitors’ pathways.
